Registration Information

Registration Fees

All registration applications incur a fee that must be paid prior to registration being approved.  Should a registration application be declined, the fee received by the Board will not be refunded.

Scopes of Practice

The Board has specified eight scopes of practice within the profession of medical radiation technology:

  1. Diagnostic Imaging General Technologist
  2. Radiation Therapist
  3. Nuclear Medicine Technologist
  4. Sonographer
  5. Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologist
  6. Trainee Nuclear Medicine Technologist
  7. Trainee Sonographer
  8. Trainee Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologist

Without registration a person may not use any of the above titles or do anything calculated to suggest a person is qualified to be registered or able to practise in the scopes of practice gazetted for the profession of medical radiation technology.

A practitioner may be registered and hold an annual practising certificate in more than scope of practice.

Qualifications

To be eligible for registration as a medical radiation technologist in any of the gazetted scopes of practice, you must hold a qualification prescribed by the Board or approved by the Board as being substantially equivalent to those qualifications prescribed by the Board.

In addition to having an approved qualification you may also be required to demonstrate that you have adequate experience in the relevant scope of practice.

Registration Examination Assessment (REA) Path to Registration

In some instances an overseas trained practitioner may not hold a qualification that is approved as being substantially equivalent to the relevant New Zealand qualification prescribed by the Board, but does have significant clinical experience in the relevant scope of practice.  The Board may offer these practitioners an opportunity to sit a registration examination assessment (REA) as a path to gaining registration in New Zealand.

Fitness to Practise

When applying for registration you must be able to demonstrate to the Board that you are a fit person to practise in the profession of medical radiation technology.

English Language Requirements

Communicating with patients, medical staff and colleagues is a core competency required of a medical radiation technologist.  If your medical radiation technology training was carried out in a language other than English, you will need to provide the Board with evidence that you are proficient in English, prior to registration being approved.
